Hip Tendon Pain

Pain on the outside of the hip is one of the most common reasons people come to Mississippi Motion. Walking, stairs, and lying on that side usually make it worse.

The source is often a gluteal tendon. An ultrasound exam in the office shows the tendon and the bursa so treatment is aimed at the tissue that is actually damaged.

When that tendon is the problem, Dr. Penton offers two in-office options: platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and TenJet. No open surgery, and you go home the same day.

The usual source

Gluteal Tendon Pain

This is one of the most common problems people bring to Dr. Penton. The pain sits on the outside of the hip. Walking, stairs, and lying on that side make it worse.

People are often told it is bursitis. Ultrasound in the office shows whether the gluteal tendon is damaged, whether the bursa is involved, or both. That picture decides the treatment.

Two office options

PRP or TenJet

Both treatments are done in the clinic. Offering PRP and TenJet in the office is uncommon. At Mississippi Motion, Dr. Penton does both, and he picks from the exam.

PRP is not a guarantee of pain relief or restored function. Not every tendon is a candidate for TenJet.

Hip Arthritis

Arthritis is pain from the joint itself, not from the gluteal tendon. Dr. Penton treats arthritis in any joint with platelet-rich plasma. Read About Joint Injections.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can hip tendon pain be treated without surgery?

Often, yes. For pain on the outside of the hip from a gluteal tendon, Dr. Penton offers two in-office options: platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and TenJet. Both are done in the clinic. There is no open surgery, and you go home the same day.

How does Dr. Penton tell a tendon problem from bursitis?

Outside hip pain is often called bursitis. Dr. Penton examines the hip and uses diagnostic ultrasound in the office to see whether the pain is coming from the gluteal tendon, the bursa, or both. The exam decides whether PRP or TenJet fits.

What is the difference between PRP and TenJet?

PRP is an injection of platelets from your own blood, used to support healing in the damaged tendon. TenJet is an ultrasound-guided procedure that removes damaged tendon tissue through a tiny puncture. Dr. Penton chooses from the exam and imaging. PRP is not a guarantee of pain relief or restored function.

Will insurance cover PRP or TenJet for hip tendon pain?

PRP is considered an elective or self-pay treatment by many insurance plans. Coverage varies, and the PRP fee is due at the visit unless other arrangements have been made. TenJet coverage varies by plan, procedure, and diagnosis. Call the office for current pricing and to check benefits before scheduling.

What if the pain is hip arthritis, not the tendon?

Hip arthritis is a joint problem, not a gluteal tendon problem. Dr. Penton treats arthritis in any joint with platelet-rich plasma. That visit is described on the joint injections page.
